Safety on the Road
We know that safety is vital. It’s important not only to the integrity of our business and for the well-being of our carriers, customers, and communities, but also for the health of your business, too. Safety – more specifically, preventable driving behaviors – can have a significant positive impact on reducing the cost of accidents (including repairs and high insurance claims).
Unsafe Driving Behaviors
A recent study by industrial technology provider Samsura shows that the majority of unsafe driving behaviors occur at the beginning and end of shifts. This is a fact that you know and can reason with, but let’s break it down together by the data.
- During the first one-tenth of a shift, unsafe driving behaviors like rapid acceleration, harsh braking, distracted driving, and tailgating occur 26% of the time.
- 41% of these same behaviors happen during the last tenth of a shift.
- More distracted driving occurs at the beginning of shift.
- Tailgating usually occurs mid-shift, although it also happens 5% at the beginning of a shift and 16% at the end.
- Harsh braking and sudden acceleration occur more at the end.
- In addition to the sharing of data around preventable driving behaviors, story-telling and positive recognition are two other powerful tools to increase safety precautions with your driver teams.
