Chattanooga at a Glance
A Transportation Hub Then & Now
Chattanooga is home to a population of over 180,000 people and is the fourth largest city in Tennessee and one of the two principal cities of East Tennessee. Multiple railroads and interstate highways flow through Chattanooga, sealing its spot as an important transit hub in the South. Chattanooga is nicknamed the “Scenic City” due to its surrounding mountains and ridges. The city nestles between the southwestern ridge-and-valley Appalachians and the foot of Walden’s Ridge.
A Rich, Diverse History
Chattanooga’s rich history begins with Native Americans inhabiting the area. Sites going back to the Upper Paleolithic period showed continuous human occupation from 10,000 BCE to the modern day. The Chickamauga Mound resides near the mouth of Chickamauga Creek and is the older remaining visible art in Chattanooga. The city also holds some Civil War importance as the Battle of Lookout Mountain was a crucial Union victory as it drove Confederate forces off the mountain. Chattanooga marks one of the three defining Union victories which turned the Civil War in their favor.
Downtown Chattanooga hosts a wide variety of entertainment, dining, cultural, and architectural attractions. The world-famous Tennessee Aquarium is located in downtown Chattanooga as is the Creative Discovery Museum.
