Exploring Today’s Marketplace Through the Lens of Logistics

Women in Logistics

An Interview with Shauntelle Samples, Dispatch Associate at Pace

We’ve had so much success and positive feedback around our Women in Logistics series!  Thank you to those of you who have shared your comments and engaged with these posts.  Women’s History Month is over, but we have decided to continue the journey at least for one more week to tell the story of women across our company-from the back office, to executive leadership, to the field.  This week, we are featuring Shauntelle Samples, a Pace Dispatch Associate in Atlanta.  We hope you enjoy the perspective she brings to this series.

What is your job at Pace?

Pace has allowed me to continue to grow and learn within an industry that is ever-changing. Over the past fifteen years, I have primarily worked with managing those who are responsible for moving freight and/or people. During my time at Pace, I have continued working to ensure that my primary customer (our independent contractor drivers) are happy and satisfied. It is my goal to give each driver a feeling of true appreciation and respect for a job well done. Day-to-day, I’m tasked with reaching out to internal and external customers to resolve or report any issues.

What do you like about working in logistics?

Logistics is one of the most important career fields in the world. Without the planning and execution of the distribution of resources, society as we know it would cease to function. With over 15 years of experience in logistics, there are many reasons I enjoy my career.  Logistics has been a great career choice for me because it provides me with constant new opportunities. Not only is there more than enough room to grow professionally, the average salary of those working in this field is good.  Logistics is an ever-changing environment that requires timely problem-solving skills, which means it is rarely boring.  I like the fact that this industry tends to be recession-proof.  Companies continue to look for our help during downturns in the economy, which allows us to grow during both good and bad times.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

Women’s History Month is an opportunity to amplify the voices of women who have led us but who are not often recognized for their contributions. Women’s History Month is a great opportunity to bring out the pride that has strengthened us women over the years.

Who is your favorite woman in history?

Although there are MANY women who have made valuable contributions to my life, my mother is my favorite. From an early age, my mother instilled within me the importance of being a hard worker and getting along with others. I can say that from just those two life lessons, I have been able to live and maintain a happy and successful personal and professional life.

What factors do you think are contributing to increased female representation in all areas of transportation?

From my experience, I have found that accommodating the needs of a woman whose primary concern is caring for her family will increase female representation. During my time at Pace, my family has grown by two little ones. During both pregnancies and postpartum, I have discovered how important it is to have an employer who understands that quality of life is a major benefit for a working mom.

What should women know when they’re thinking of joining the logistics industry?

Women should know that there is a career for you in logistics. Because there are SO many “pieces” to the puzzle, this industry allows for anyone (no matter your education or experience) to grab hold of their niche and continuously grow. Not only should you have a specific niche in the logistics field, you should also work with others in different positions for continuous professional growth.
