Pace’s Director of Information Technology, Shane Hill, was named as an Honoree at the Birmingham Business Journal’s 2019 Veterans of Influence Awards. This special feature in the BBJ recognizes military veterans across the Birmingham area who have distinguished themselves in the local business world. Selections are made by an advisory committee who considers the honorees’ contributions to their company, a track record of innovation and leadership, and their role in the Birmingham community.
Shane served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for eight years and joined the Pace Team in 2018. He has made a positive impact throughout his many endeavors by serving his country, demonstrating successful leadership, making an impact throughout his career, and by giving back to our community through service.
Professionally, Shane has been involved in the technology sector across several Birmingham-based businesses since graduating from The University of Alabama with a BA degree in Management Information Systems and a minor in Computer Science. Throughout his career, from developer to architect to leader, Shane has displayed a unique ability to deconstruct and analyze complicated issues and implement logical and sophisticated solutions. He has led multiple teams to successful project completion and made positive contributions to each organization where he has worked.
During his time in the United States Navy Reserve, Shane served as an Information Systems Technician where he performed the majority of his Active Duty for Training in Colorado working for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA). In this role, Shane was able to combine his civilian IT/Consulting skillset with the needs of the Department of Defense, MDA, and the United States Navy to help integrate the Navy with the MDA’s mission to develop, test and prepare for deployment of a missile defense system. Shane’s contributions helped form the doctrine that is still in place today for the Navy’s defense of the U.S. and our NATO allies from missile threats. For this contribution, Shane was awarded the Joint Service Achievement Medal for systems development with the British Ministry of Defense as well as the Navy Achievement Medal.
Shane joined Pace as the Director of Systems and IT in April of 2018, bringing his pragmatic approach to solving complex problems. Since Pace works with customers to provide customized logistics solutions designed to solve their complex shipping needs, Shane was an ideal fit. Since joining the Pace team, he has streamlined processes through automation and utilization of resources to improve efficiencies, led a transition to a new operating system, and refined the company’s data and warehousing systems to advance reporting capabilities and better manage our business. Shane’s approach to project management and problem solving have been a true value-add to the Pace team and our customers.
Not only has Shane made an impact professionally in the Birmingham area, but he has also made an impact philanthropically. The Navy’s core values are Honor, Courage and Commitment. Pace’s core values begin with our cornerstone value to Serve Relentlessly. During his service as a US Navy Sailor and continuing to present day, Shane has learned to live and breathe these values. They drive his motivation and define who he is and how he serves his community. Shane and his wife, Julie, have been involved with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama (BCRFA) since 2006. This cause is something Shane is passionate about after losing his mother to breast cancer in 2006. His participation and support of this organization is his way to honor his mother’s memory. Shane and his wife host an annual event to raise funds for the BCRFA. They started with a small shrimp boil in their back yard in 2002, and it has since turned it into a major event and significant fundraiser for BCRFA. Shane and his wife have raised over $74,000 at their events with a net impact to BCRFA of over $1,000,000 (BCRFA has a 14:1 impact for every dollar they receive). Further, Shane serves on the Executive Committee of the University of Alabama Shelby County Alumni Chapter and is the chapter’s Past President. Shane and his wife have endowed scholarships to the chapter in honor of both of their mothers.
Shane’s commitment to his country, career, and community have led him to his place among the honorees of Birmingham Business Journal’s 2019 Veterans of Influence Awards. As fellow Pace Team members, we ourselves are honored to work alongside Shane!
