Industrial Center of the South

Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is the most populous city in the state of Alabama. Nicknamed “The Pittsburgh of the South”, Birmingham was the primary industrial center of the South, famous for its steel and iron production.

Birmingham is a major railway transportation hub. Birmingham has also been a large producer of railcars and rails.

Birmingham, Alabama History

From the start, Birmingham was founded as a city of industry.  Chartered in 1871 by the Elyton Land Company, Birmingham was noted to have an abundance of the raw materials needed to produce steel – iron ore, coal, and limestone.  To emphasize the point that the city is a hub for industry, the founders named it after one of the world’s premier industrial cities at the time – Birmingham in England.

The Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham

In addition to being a center of industry in the South, Birmingham played a central role in the United States Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s. In fact, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail” treatise against segregation while he was imprisoned in Birmingham after taking part in a nonviolent protest.

Culture and Diversity in Birmingham

Birmingham has a rich cultural history with many diverse and interesting places to explore. Birmingham is home to the largest museum collection in the Southeast United States – the Birmingham Museum of Art.  Also in Birmingham, there is the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and many other places of cultural interest. Birmingham also hosts the Alabama Ballet, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Birmingham Ballet, Birmingham Concert Chorale, and Opera Birmingham. 

If cultural festivals are more your speed, Birmingham has plenty to offer.  There is the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival which brings filmmakers from all over the world.  The Sloss Furnaces has an annual Halloween haunted attraction called the Sloss Fright Furnace.  There is also the Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz festival which draws in national and local jazz talents to the Birmingham community.
