Detroit, Michigan at a Glance

Connecting Cultures

The area that would eventually become Detroit was inhabited by Huron, Odawa, Potawatomi, and Iroquois people. French colonists penetrated the region in the mid 1630s and founded a New France fur trading post. By 1920 Detroit had become a world-class industrial city based on the developing and booming automobile industry, nicknamed the moniker “Motor City.”

Birth of Motown

Detroit also was the birthplace of the Motown Record Corporation. Motown played an important role in the racial integration of pop music as an African-American owned label that achieved broad success across cultures and audiences. Detroit is also the birthplace of techno music in the early 1980s. Notable Detroit artists include Eminem and Big Sean. Plenty of Interesting Attractions

Detroit is home to many fun and interesting attractions. The Detroit Zoo https://detroitzoo.org is a fun visit for animal enthusiasts, as it is home to animals from A to Z, anteaters and aardvarks to zebras.

Other local attractions include the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village which houses the chair President Lincoln was assassinated in as well as the limo President Kennedy rode in when he was assassinated.

Sports minded visitors could take in a Michigan Wolverines football game or a Michigan State Spartans basketball game. 

Educational Opportunities Abound

The colleges and universities opportunities in and nearby Detroit include Wayne State University, University of Detroit Mercy, and Henry Ford College. 

The University of Michigan is located in nearby Ann Arbor, and Michigan State University is in nearby Lansing.
